BMC to construct World Cup gallery

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to construct a special gallery in Mumbai to preserve the memories of India’s victory in the cricket World Cup this year, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray announced on Wednesday.

“The Indian team won the World Cup after 28 years and, that too, in Mumbai. To preserve the memories, the BMC will construct a special gallery in Mumbai,” he said.

Thackeray will personally monitor and conceptualise the gallery. He has discussed the idea with Ratnakar Shetty, chief executive officer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and is also in talks with experts in the field.

“We will soon declare the place where the gallery will be situated. This place will have the photographs of special moments from the World Cup, special video clips and memoirs of the players. It will also host bats, pads, gloves, caps and helmets used by the cricket players in the tournament,” he said.

In 1999, Sena activists had attacked the BCCI office in Mumbai during their protest against the cricket match between India and Pakistan. During the attack, which was led by Sena member Shrikant Sarmalkar, the 1983-won Prudential World Cup trophy was also damaged.
