Shiv Sena-BJP-RPI and Congress-NCP have sewn up rival alliances for the next month's election of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) after tortuous talks; now reservation of wards is proving to be another headache while distributing wards among the partners.

Congress and NCP are still in talks over a ward in Goregaon (north Mumbai) where both NCP leader Sharad Rao's son Shashank and sitting corporator Samir Desai want to stand.

The situation arose because Desai's existing ward has been reserved for women. In Chembur, Industry Minister Narayan Rane (Congress) wants a ward for his supporter, while NCP claims it is in a better position to win from there.

NCP MP from Mumbai North-East, Sanjay Dina Patil, has demanded that his sister-in-law be fielded from a ward in Bhandup, where sitting corporator is a Congressman.

NCP also wants Congress to forgo a ward in Byculla, central Mumbai, for the brother of Minister of State for Housing, Sachin Ahir. Congress had finished second in this ward last time, and local Congress MLA, Madhu Chavan, is against ceding it to NCP.

On the other side, BJP leadership is facing resentment of cadres for ceding a ward in Worli to Shiv Sena. BJP sources said the party had parted with three wards from its quota in return for three other wards.

BJP has given Anushakti nagar ward to Sena, to accommodate Standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale (a Shiv Sena man) whose existing ward has been reserved for women. BJP also gave Worli and Andheri wards to the Sena as they were reserved for women, sources said.

In return, BJP has got wards in Andheri west, Colaba and Hiranandani, where the party is likely to field Gopinath Munde's former aide Amit Satam, state BJP chief Sudhir Mungantiwar's aide Amol Jadhav and senior leader Kirit Somaiya's former aide Deepak Dalvi, respectively, party sources said.
