Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been given permission by the Bombay high court to use Shivaji Park at Dadar for parking heavy vehicles during Ganapati immersion. However, the civic body will have to restore the park to its original state afterwards. The civic body has also been asked to come up with proper parking plan for forthcoming festivals.

The Bombay high court on Thursday granted permission to the civic body to use the park for parking vehicles on September 5, 6, 7 and 11 with the condition that the municipal commissioner and the commissioner of police give an undertaking that they would restore the park after the festival.

September 6 is Gauri immersion and September 11 is Anant Chaturdashi, last day of Ganapati.

The court has also asked the corporation and the traffic department to demarcate areas for parking.

A division bench of chief justice Mohit Shah and justice Rekha Sondur-Baldota has directed the government to come up with alternate plan in consultation with the petitioner, Wecom Trust a, NGO.

This is the second consecutive year when the corporation has approached the high court seeking permission for parking vehicles inside the park.

Devendra Jain, assistant commissioner with the G West ward, filed the application seeking permission for parking approximately 400 trucks on four days during Ganapati and two days of Navratri. The court has not granted any permission for Navratri.

Counsels for Wecom — V Tulzapurkar and Sandeep Aole — pointed out that the corporation had given an undertaking to come up with an alternate parking plan even last year, which has not been done till date. “Every year they at the last minute they ask permission to park vehicles inside the park,” argued Tulzapurkar.

The court has asked police commissioner and municipal commissioner to hold a meeting in the 3rd or 4th week of September with the Wecom trust to chalk out an alternate plan.
