A college student was killed and his friend was seriously injured when the bike they were travelling on was allegedly hit by a speeding Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) dumper on the Andheri flyover on Friday afternoon.

It was around 12.30 pm. Jaimin Jasoliya and Ravi Dhameliya, both 19-year-old and second year BSc students of Mithibai College, were on their way back home after attending tuitions in Vile Parle. Dhameliya was in the rider’s seat. Witnesses said that as the bike was crossing the Andheri flyover, a BMC dumper (MHO1-L- 4494) rammed into it from behind. Dhameliya was thrown off the bike. Jasoliya, who was riding pillion, came under the rear wheel of the dumper and died on the spot.

However, the police have their doubts about the mishap. Inspector R Patil of Andheri police station said, “We have detained the dumper driver, and have started our probe. The dumper allegedly hit the bike from behind, but strangely it was the front section of the bike that was damaged.

“We are trying to find out what exactly happened. It is not clear whether the dumper had hit the bike, or the bike hit some other vehicle and came in front of the dumper. We will probe the mishap from every angle and record the injured victim’s statement before finalising our charges against the dumper driver.”

Dhameliya’s father, Praveen, said, “The two boys were the best of friends, and always travelled together. Every day, my son dropped Jaimin (Jasoliya) at Andheri station, from where he used to take the train to Borivli.” The Dhameliyas live near the pump house in Andheri (East). The Jasoliyas have their home in Kent Tower, Borivli.

A family friend of the Dhameliyas said, “Ravi (Dhameliya) had a close shave as he was thrown off the bike. Recovering, he called up his parents and some family friends, who live in Chakala, and told them about the mishap. They all came rushing. Ravi was taken to Nanavati Hospital. Jasoliya was rushed to Cooper Hospital, where he was declared dead before admission.”

“Jasoliya’s father, Manubhai, is a diamond trader, and has an office in the Opera House. He was the only son of his parents — all his four siblings are girls. One of his sisters is scheduled to get married on November 23,” said, Ritesh Shah, a business friend of the father of the deceased. “The boy was very excited about the marriage. Before leaving home on Friday, he had told his parents that he might go shopping after his tuitions.”
