Mumbaikar will get another Olympic-size swimming pool soon as the civic body has decided to renovate its General Arunkumar Vaidya Taran Talav at Chembur by spending Rs12 crore. This pool will be redeveloped on the lines of the Mahatma Gandhi swimming pool at Shivaji Park.
The civic body has already earmarked Rs1 crore in this year’s budget for redevelopment projects. In addition to this, the municipal commissioner has also assured to provide Rs8 crore for the additional expenditure in the current year.
Civic standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale said, “Facilities like a sports complex, Olympic-size swimming pool and gymnasium will be a part of this revamp plan.”
According to the civic officials, the BMC has decided to set up an Olympic-size swimming pool in its revamp plan. To ensure the better quality of water, the filtering system will be modernised. The sports complex will have gymnasium and amenities for games like carom, chess etc. The parking and office area will also be beautified to add allure to the swimming pool premises. The Chembur swimming pool, constructed in 1993, has been closed due to shortage of water from 10 July 2009, and also for repairs.
The BMC owns eight swimming pools in the city. But it has given the pools at Andheri Sports complex, ozone swimming pool, Goregaon, Priyardarshini Krida Sankool, Mulund and the Prabodhankar Thackeray Swimming Pool, Vile Parle to private trusts, while the remaining pools — Mahatma Gandhi swimming pool, Shivaji Park, Chembur and Sardar Vallabhaibhai Patel swimming pool at Kandivli have been under repairs for several years.
Ghatkopar Lions swimming pool, which was the only functional swimming pool till now, has also been now closed indefinitely as the filtration plant has failed for the third time since November. After a long gap, the Ghatkopar pool was re-opened on November 20, 2010.
