The clean-up marshals, who prevent people from littering the city, will now be also guarding the important nullahs in the city. The BMC has decided to depute the marshals to stop citizens from dumping garbage in the nullahs. The move is slated to prevent choking of nullahs during monsoon.

“Even though the civic contractors are de-silting the nullahs, the garbage never ceases to exist. It has been noticed that despite several instructions, people continue to dump garbage in the nullahs. To make people aware of repercussions of their actions and to stop them, clean-up marshals will be deployed,” said Aseem Gupta, additional municipal commissioner.

If people continue to dump garbage, the purpose of cleaning nullahs is not met. This will result in flooding and choking of nullahs, he added.

The BMC will identify 10 chronic nullahs in the city, which are most susceptible to flooding. Civic officials said that amongst the list of chronic nullahs will be Dahisar nullah, Poisar nullah and Nanapada nullah.

The BMC will give out work orders for appointing marshals at these nullahs. Around 25 marshals will be deployed immediately within a month and would be appointed at the nullahs till monsoon.

If caught throwing garbage in nullahs, the marshals will be free to levy fine on offenders. The marshals will be entitled to slap fines ranging from Rs100 to Rs2000. “In case of repeat offenders, the marshals will be free to fine people for the offence,” added Gupta.
Moreover to specify that the citizens are not looted unnecessarily, the BMC will provide marshals with identity cards. A marshal will have to display the card to prove that he is authorised to levy fines by the BMC.
