On Saturday afternoon, most of the shops were full of the customers demanding beer.
Yogesh Diwate of Pritam wine shop on the Ganeshkhind Road told DNA, “Our sale had doubled even on the day of the semi final against Pakistan. We normally sell about 12 beer bottles every day, but on Saturday, we ended up selling 26 bottles by 2 pm.’’
Diwate pointed out that beer was anyway popular during summer.
Likewise, Shrinivas Nagpille, manager, SM Gule wines shop at Good Luck Chowk on Fergusson College Road said, “We normally sell 20 beer bottles a day, but today, we have already sold 70 beers by 2.30 pm. I have noticed that whenever India does well, we get a good response from our customers.’’
Manager of Maharaja wine shop Rajdeep Patil at Deep Bungalow Chowk told DNA, “We received a good response from our customers during the entire Cricket World Cup. We normally sell 15 cans, but today, we sold 30 bottles before 3 pm.’’
Regular customer Kaluram Bhadale epitomised the mood when he told DNA, “There is no fun in watching cricket without drinking beer.’
However, when DNA contacted deputy superintendent RV Nimbalkar of the state excise department, he preferred to play safe and said, “We get only monthly figures from retailers and hence, we are not able to give you any figures today.’’
