Barge hits Kalwa bridge in Thane

A huge barge hit about a century-old Kalwa bridge here damaging it partially, district officials said.

They said the barge was heading towards Navi Mumbai from Dombivli when it hit the pillars of the bridge in the morning hours.

As the width of the damaged barge was same as that of the bridge, it is suspected that the freight boat might have broken due to the impact, the officials said.

According to them, earlier also there were similar instances involving the huge barges that hit the pillars of the bridge thus rendering it weak.

The bridge had then been repaired then and later put to use for light vehicles.

However, the revenue department officials said thatthe bridge itself did not not pose any threat as of now now.
