Around 214 customary stall owners, who have set up stalls in the Bandra fair from generations, will not be denied permission to set up stalls from this year. The demand was raised in the meeting held on Friday to chalk out a foolproof plan for the smooth functioning of Bandra fair.

The meeting of the civic officials along with representatives of people was held in BMC office in Bandra.

“These 214 stall owners are the residents of Bandra village and have been setting up stalls as a tradition and not as a business.

As per the Jesuit documents the fair has been functional from 17th century, and even the forefathers of these hawkers were setting up stalls as a part of tradition. Hence, they should not be denied to set up stalls,” said advocate Parag Pradhan, representative of intervener in the petition filed against the Bandra fair, in last year.

Residents of buildings in the vicinity of the Mount Mary Church had filed a petition complaining about the inconvenience caused by the fair held around the church in September. They said the BMC permitted unauthorised hawkers who crowded the roads and made it difficult for residents to use their cars. The court had asked the civic body to ‘balance rival interests’ since the matter involved religious sentiments and also the right of citizens to a life free of inconvenience.

Pradhan added that, the discussions were also held about the stalls which are given by auction by the BMC. “There are special powers with the commissioner, by which he can give permission to set up temporary stalls. We had a discussion on these stall owners, but final decision will be taken soon.”

The other matters discussed in the meeting include deployment of the special forces to control stampede like situations, locations of fire brigade van, police van; putting sign boards during the fair time, regulation of traffic flow and BEST services. The need to include the church committee members for the next meeting was
also discussed.
