Perhaps this is what the Shiv Sena intends to do to counter the threat posed by Raj Thackeray’s MNS, which has eaten into the former’s youth base. The launch of Uddhav Thackeray’s son Aditya, 21, as the president of Yuva Sena, Sena’s youth wing, was surely a step to stop the damage. And the occasion, arguably, could not have been better: the party’s Dussehra rally on Sunday.

Sena, which was always considered as an army of young Marathis, is now finding it hard to deal with Raj’s popularity among the youth. With the launch of the Yuva Sena and Aditya, the Sena hopes to begin a new era of leadership and regain some of the ground it lost to the MNS.

After the launch of the MNS, its chief Raj Thackeray, who once led Sena’s student wing Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena (BVS), began to be known as ‘Yuva Hriday Samrat’. This was clearly not good news for the Sena, facing the threat of losing the youth base. Hence, the party think-tank wanted to ensure that it never lacked the youth force.

Political experts say the Sena has made an intelligent move by not naming Aditya as the in-charge of the BVS. This move will surely avoid the comparison between the uncle and the nephew and their ways of functioning.

Aditya has already made it clear that his competition is not with his uncle Raj, but it does not need much analysis to figure out why Sena leaders are trying to make Aditya’s entry in a political arena a grand one. Sena mouthpiece Samana on Sunday also carried a special coverage on today’s youth claiming that, in spite of everything said and done, the Shiv Sena alone and its chief, Bal Thackeray, is still the leader of the younger generation.

Sena, the party which was known more for its street fights than the negotiations on the table, has changed a bit in the past few years.
According to the experts, the party’s image of being an aggressive party and the party which is not scared of police’s lathis is taking a backstage, and the leadership wants to make sure that this does not happen.

The only way this can be done is by enrolling more young cadres in the party, and to achieve that, Yuva Sena will play an important role.
