In what can spell more trouble for industrialist Atulya Mafatlal’s estranged wife Sheetal,  a trading and investment firm has sought a CID inquiry against the socialite for stealing a painting worth
Rs 2 crore from the Mafatlal bunglow.

Mangalya Trading and Investment Ltd, which handles the investments of the Mafatlal family, has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court seeking an inquiry by the state Crime Investigation Department (CID) against Sheetal for allegedly stealing a painting worth Rs2 crore. Atulya Mafatlal is also a director of the firm.

The petition is filed by Mangalya and Peter William Joseph, a director of the firm. The firm looks after investments and also purchases valuables, antique articles, paintings and other things of the Mafatlals.

According to the petition, it purchased a huge painting by artist Manjit Bawa from Sakshi Gallery Synergy and Art Foundation for Rs5,53,700 on March 29, 1997. It learnt on July 28, 2011 that the painting was stolen from the Mafatlal bungalow. Since the painting belonged to Mangalya, it enquired with family members of Mafatlal.

They learnt that on July 11, Sheetal, with the help of some associates, had removed the painting without the consent of family members. The petition claims that the current value of the painting is Rs2 crore.  It further alleges that Sheetal took away the painting, which lawfully belongs to Mangalya.

Mangalya had sent a written complaint to the Gamdevi police on August 2, asking it to register a case against Sheetal under Sections 380 and 120 (B) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The petition prays that the Gamdevi police be directed to lodge an FIR against Sheetal.

It also prays that the investigation should be transferred to the CID and that the investigating agency should be directed to submit periodical reports. The high court has kept the petition for hearing on September 14.
