Anti-corruption drive takes 'dahi handi' path of protest

A dozen organisations working for the social security of unorganised workers in Pune protested against the Union government for not passing the Jan Lokpal Bill, in front of the district collectorate on Monday.

The students of Santulan Pashan School broke the dahi handi, symbolising corruption, organised by the members of these outfits. More than 300 men, women and schoolchildren took part in the unique agitation.

Addressing the protestors, Dagadkhan Asanghatit Kamgar Vikas Parishad president BM Rege said, “If the Centre does not take positive steps towards passing the Jan Lokpal Bill by August 25, the members of all social organisations will organise a chakka jam across the state.”

Heerabai Kshirsagar, a housemaid said, “I don’t know the pros and cons of Anna Hazare’s Bill, but when the social leader, at this advanced age, is fasting for people then it is our duty to extend support to him.”

The protestors were representing various social organisations like Footpathwasi Parishad and Santulan Mahila Parishad.
