In another incident, a 42-year-old woman died in an accident at Palm Beach Road as a result of hit and run, on Monday night at around 9.10pm. Advocate Heena Thakkar who was riding back home on her two-wheeler to Sanpada from Kamothe, was hit by an unidentified vehicle.

The police said Thakkar was seen lying on the road and then rushed to Suraj Hospital in Sanpada, where she was declared dead.  The accident occurred opposite Affaires building on Palm Beach Road. This was the third accident that happened on Monday while the other two accidents were minor ones.

A case against unidentified accused has been registered with the Turbhe police under Sections 279, 304A of the IPC and Sections 184, 187 of the Motor Vehicles Act as per the complaint registered by her husband Prakash, an advocate. Both husband and wife worked in Kamothe and have a daughter who is currently in Standard XII, confirmed the police.

In the first accident, Rajkumar Sonawane, 45, who was on his bike, was hit by a car at the Sector 50 junction on Palm Beach Road following which he received minor injuries.

Sonawane was riding from CBD Belapur and was taking a right turn at Sector 50 while, when the collision took place. Following the accident, a case against Mohammad Shahbaz Mohammad Anwar, the driver of the car, has been registered with NRI Police Station.

In another case, an Alto car rammed onto the divider near Sarsole Junction on the same road, following which the driver received minor injuries.

These three accidents in a single day have raised an alarm among the traffic cops. The following day, DCP (traffic) Vijay Patil and traffic officials of the Nerul unit conducted a survey on the Palm Beach Road to find a solution to reduce the speed of the vehicles.

The NMMC is currently working on implementing the directions suggested by the traffic department in its proposal to make the road safer. This includes installation of rumbling strips. “Putting up barricades can be a possibility. But, at night, the barricades will not be visible which will increase the chances of accident. Currently, we are surveying and soon we will come to a decision,” DCP (traffic) Vijay Patil said.
