Central Intelligence agencies have alerted the state police and other authorities of a possible terror attack at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

The alert does not specifically say about a particular spot to be attacked and thus all airstrips and helipads are under threat and security has been beefed up at the airport and nearby areas.

According to Union Home Ministry sources, the attack according to intelligence agencies could be an airborne one and small aircraft and helicopters could be used for the attack.

Other than the police and security agencies, authorities manning air traffic have also been told to keep a watch on the movement of small aircraft and helicopters.

On September 10, the assistant commissioner of police, Santa Cruz division, wrote to the Juhu airstrip authorities asking them not to allow joyrides on choppers on September 11 and September 12. He told them not to allow flying of aircraft over immersion sites.

Other than Maharashtra, the intelligence input also alerted neighbouring states such as Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa on the suspected terror attack.

The Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram held a meeting with state police chief, ATS chief and Mumbai police commissioner and state home minister and bureaucrats on Monday evening. He asked details on the development in investigation of 13/7 blasts and suggested that the investigation be handed over to the National Investigative Agency.

State home minister RR Patil said the terror alert is not  specific but security has been beefed up at the airport. The 13/7 investigation will remain with Maharashtra ATS, he said.
