Deputy chief minister and leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Ajit Pawar, said that the two administrators appointed for the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank (MSCB) should not succumb to political pressure and work in a transparent manner.
He was speaking to the media after meeting the board of directors of the Pune District Central Cooperative Bank (PDCC) in the city on Friday.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on May 7 had dismissed the board of directors of the MSCB and had appointed two administrators following a negative net worth of Rs144.22 crore found in the bank’s statutory audit for2009-10.

The agriculture and marketing principal secretary, SK Goyal, and planning secretary, S Shrivastava, have been appointed the new administrators of the apex cooperative bank in the state.

As the bank is a power centre of state’s cooperative
sector and was under Pawar’s control, the RBI action has led to a political tussle between the Congress and the NCP.

Pawar said, “Action should be taken in an unbiased manner. If somebody is guilty then facts should be made public.”

Accusing the media for portraying him as the person
behind the bank’s losing credibility, he said the cooperative sugar mill and the PDCC with which he is associated are not MSCB defaulters. The PDCC has got a profit of Rs27 crore in the last financial year.

“We take care that a cooperative institution is not run in a wrong manner,” he said.

When pointed out that he on Thursday had read out the list of cooperative institutions who owe money to the MSCB related to only the Congress, he said that cooperative institutions run by other political parties’ leaders are also in the defaulters’ list and the bank did not provide loans on the basis of political affiliation.
