After DNA highlighted the sorry state of the road leading to Elphinstone station, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has finally started the repair work of the perennially water-logged Balshet Madurkar Marg in Parel. The narrow stretch of the arterial road had sunk in due to leaking from the underground storm water drain and the road was full of potholes.

DNA on November 4 had reported that the 30-meter stretch is a disaster for commuters. The road sees heavy traffic and the stretch is the only route that connects the station to adjoining areas in Lower Parel and Worli.

Despite being a crucial stretch, the miserable condition of road was being neglected for over a year. The BMC has reinstated the entire stretch of the road with asphalt and macadam. “The work was pending since a year. We could not reinstate the road as we were first carrying out repair work of the underlying storm water drain. Now, the excavations on the side have been filled and the entire stretch has been newly laid,” said Assistant Municipal Commissioner (G-south) NV Pai.

Last year, the civic administration had done some temporary patch work on the road.

“It’s a great relief that the road has been repaired. The path was damaged and always filled with water and murk. Murk used to splash whenever we walked on it and due to which our office uniform used to get dirty everyday,” said Shenaz Anwar, who works in a nearby corporate office.
