The jostle for space at the crowded Dadar station might ease up, as the Western Railway (WR) have decided to build a new Dadar station premise, mid air, and open up entry-exit points on the Tulsi Pipe Road in the west.

The new “mid-town” terminus will be the hub of the new 12-car and 15-car suburban trains that will be introduced in the coming years. The new layout might solve the problems related to Dadar station once and for all.

“It’s an ambitious project and work has begun. The pillars for the elevated surface are almost ready and the entire premise will be up, parallel to Tilak Bridge,” a WR official said.

“The space below will also carry new tracks to Mumbai Central for outstation trains and additional platforms. This will give us more space for trains and passengers,” he added.

At present, there is no space at Dadar station in the west, and the existing entry-exit points at Dadar station are clogged by hawkers. The only breathing space available is along Tulsi Pipe Road that runs parallel to the rail lines. “We will build a bridge with ramps and elevators that will land on the Tulsi Pipe Road. If the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) allows us, we will even build the bridge across the road to land on the other side,” another official said.

The cost of the present project is about Rs30 crore and work is at an advanced stage with pillars ready and digging on, with a concrete mix plant set up at the site for faster work. The project should be completed by 2013-14.

Once ready, the new premise will offer entry and parking facilities for vehicles from Tilak Bridge itself, and one will not have to pass through narrow alleys and bridges to access the station. “In fact, the space between Matunga Road and Dadar station will be a hub of activity in the next few years,” he added.
