Byculla police Saturday arrested a 59-year-old man who works in the income tax department, after a woman filed a compliant against him alleging that he has reportedly cheated her on the pretext of marrying her and had physical relations with her.

The accused allegedly took private pictures of the victim on his mobile and threatened to circulate it if she would approach police.

The accused was identified as Prakash Patwardhan, who works as a cashier and resides in Khira Bajar, Navi Badi in Marine lines area.

According to police, the 54-year-old woman resident of Mazgaon, who also worked in the IT department filed an application against Patwardhan in the Manzgaon court.

“Following this we investigated the case and after getting the evidence against Patwardhan we arrested him,” said a police officer.

“The victim alleged in her compliant that she was transferred to the Nariman point branch in 1987 where she met Patwardhan and the duo then got close. Till 2000, they were just friend and after that they fell in love.

“One day Patawardhan took her to a temple in Chiplun, where she claimed they had solemnized marriage according to Hindu ritual. But the marriage is not registered as per law,” said senior police inspector LH Mathure of the Byculla police station.

“The victim then asked Patwardhan several times to register their marriage but he avoided her. In April 2011, the victim came to know that Patwardhan had an affair with another woman,” said Mathure.

Victim also claims that when her nephew tried to talk to him, Patwardhan threatened him. The victim then filed an application in the Mazgaon court, which directed the police to investigate the matter.

“We had registered compliant against Patwardhan a month ago and we then investigated the case. We later arrested him and produced in the court. The court has granted him to police custody for one day,” said police officer.

Patwardhan has been arrested under the sections 420 (for cheating), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (II) (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
