In a robbery-cum-murder case, a 55-year-old woman was murdered at her residence in suburban Vikhroli yesterday and her valuables robbed by unidentified persons, police said today.

It was the third murder in the city over the last few days involving elderly women.

The deceased Latika Kamble was found lying unconscious with a severe head injury on a bed inside the flat of Kalpana Vihar society building in the Kannamwar Nagar area when her nephew Sandeep reached home last evening, police said.

She was rushed to nearby hospital where she was declared dead, police said.

Investigators suspect the insiders hand in the crime as the preliminary probe indicated that there was no forced entry.

According to police, Sandeep returned home from work around 8 pm yesterday and knocked the door but there was no response. When he managed to open the door, he found Latika lying unconscious on a bed with severe head injuries.

Latika Kamble stayed with her son, daughter and nephew Sandeep. The other two had also left for work in the morning, police said.

"The deceased had injuries on her head. The accused had used a blunt object to hit her and escaped with her ornaments and mobile phone collectively worth around Rs66,000," a police officer said adding further probe was on.

Earlier, an 85-year-old widow, Tabitha Fransic Fonseca, was allegedly strangulated to death on Thursday night at her two-storeyed ancestral building at Hindu Colony in central Mumbai's Dadar area.

On Monday, an interior designer Bharti Shah (68) was found murdered at her residence at Anand society in suburban Juhu and the two suspects, who worked as servants, were not traceable since the incident.
