400 senior citizens celebrate World Senior Citizens Day in Pune

Nearly 400 senior citizens from the city celebrated World Senior Citizens Day at Nivara Old Age Home in Navi Peth on Saturday. The event was organised by the Federation of Senior Citizens’ Organisations Maharashtra (Fescom) and the Association of Senior Citizens’ Organisations of Pune (Ascop).
One could witness the enthusiasm and energy of the senior citizens as they celebrated the day that belonged to them. “We are celebrating this day out of joy. Senior citizens are grossly in society. These occasions enable us to enjoy ourselves and have some fun,” said Vijay Sheth, executive president of Ascop.
Apart from the cultural event, Ascop felicitated nine senior citizens over 90 years who are actively involved in social work, GK Godbole (90) who was honoured said, “By being involved we justify our experience as we can utilise it in social activities. This felicitation encourages us.”
Former risk management consultant to State Private and PRO-CT agencies the US, Dr Vasant Wagh, was the chief guest. He explained to senior citizens the importance of accepting aging and taking necessary measures to deal with it.
“Senior citizens are the jewels and pearls of the nation. It is essential for them to take care of themselves,” Wagh said.
