Thirty-eight new police sub-inspectors (PSIs) have joined the city police, joining the 700-odd PSI-rank officers posted to the 28 police stations in the city and the crime and special branches in the Pune police commissionerate.

They are part of the new batch of more than 100 PSIs that joined the state police and posted in different police commissionerates.

A senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer attached to the city police told DNA that the new batch would be assigned duties in police stations, administration, special branch and foreign registration office as per requirement.

The induction of the PSIs would boost manpower. The Pune police are reeling under a shortage of hands — against the assigned strength of more than 10,000, it has a strength of about 8,000.

A senior police inspector attached to the city police station told DNA, "It is a positive step for us as we were facing a staff crunch."
"Since there is a severe shortage of PSIs in the city, some assistant sub-inspectors had been made PSIs for 89 days. But it was adversely affecting investigation of cases," he said.

According to the inspector, the new officers would definitely make a difference in work.

He said, "The new officers are keen to work hard as they want to put in their best. This we can use in our work," he said.
