After six months of investigation, officials of the crime branch claimed to have solved the mystery of a human skeleton found in a water tank atop a seven-storey Tardeo building with the arrest of four construction workers from Orissa.

“On Saturday, we arrested Ghanshyam Rana, 27, Devdhan Rana, 22, Dhansingh Rana, 24 and Anil Rana, 23, from Orissa for killing their colleague Digambar Maji, 26, after a minor quarrel in 2008, and dumping the body in the water tank,” said Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime).

On March 4, MHADA officials had found a skeleton in the unused water tank located on the terrace of Maniyar building.

The skeleton was later sent to Nair hospital for analysis, Roy added.

During investigation, the Tardeo police and crime branch officials found that no one had been reported missing from the area in the last one year.

More than 100 families reside in the three wings of Maniyar building, which is more than two decades old.

The officials then shifted their focus to the construction labourers in the area.

Inspector Manohar Dhanawade and constables Gulabrao Phaphale and Nilesh Kadam of crime branch unit-III then interrogated several construction workers who lived on the terrace of the building during the construction of nearby Mhada buildings. They got a tip-off about Dhansingh and also got his mobile number.

Dhanawade then went to Raipur in Chhattisgarh, where Dhansingh was working at a site, and interrogated him.

Dhansingh reportedly broke down and confessed that they had killed Maji and dumped his body in the tank in 2008.
