The standing committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Tuesday approved the BRTS (bus rapid transit system) on 27 more roads in the city. It will cost Rs98 crore for converting 101km into BRTS routes.

It will be a mixed BRTS: PMPML buses and private vehicles will use 60km of the newly identified routes, while 41km will be dedicated lanes for BRTS buses.

Fergusson College Road, Jungli Maharaj Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, Paud Road, Ganeshkhind Road, Ahmednagar Road, Baner Road, Bund Garden to Yerawada, Alandi Road, Sadalbaba Dargah to Sangamwadi, Mundhwa bypass, Vimannagar to Ramwadi are the stretches where the planned BRTS work will start.

Standing committee chairman Arvind Shinde said the proposal was passed with a majority. The Union government has released Rs582 crore for implementing the BRTS in the city. It is mandatory for the PMC to implement the project.

Shinde said the BRTS concept is good. “Once the work is completed, citizens will see good results. Commuters travelling on the pilot BRTS route between Katraj and Hadapsar are happy,” he added.

But the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena opposed the proposal and said the pilot BRTS project was a failure and asked how the ruling Congress-NCP alliance believed that the same civic administration would be able to implement it successfully.

The civic administration said the road widening, building of cycle tracks and footpaths have already been completed on many roads. In this phase, the PMC will build the dedicated lanes and 733 bus stops. The BRTS routes will pass through 128 chowks in city.

The leader of house, NCP’s Nilesh Nikam, said it is mandatory to start work, as the Union government has released the funds. The PMC will take care that there will be no chaos like the pilot BRTS while completing the project.

BJP leader Mukta Tilak and Shiv Sena corporator Vijay Deshmukh said they will oppose the BRTS scheme.
