The mysterious death of the 24-year-old youth who died on Friday has become murkier as the preliminary postmortem report has revealed that he died of lung fibrosis and not due to any injuries.

A forensic doctor from JJ hospital said, “As per preliminary findings, the youth died of lung fibrosis. The cause of fibrosis is not known. It’s a scar on the lung. He didn’t have any significant external injuries though. The final report is awaited.”

The family of the deceased identified as Sachin Khopkar, a resident of the Mhada colony at Vashi Naka in Chembur, has alleged that he died of police torture.

Other doctors say that a 24-year old is unlikely to die of lung fibrosis. “It heals over a period of time. Tuberculosis is one of the causes of lung fibrosis,” said a senior doctor from a BMC-run hospital. Another doctor said that normally, people over 40 die of a type of lung fibrosis called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis over a period of time.

Khopkar’s brother, Naresh said, “My brother suffered from a heart ailment since childhood. He underwent treatment for around 15 years after which the heart healed. He has never had any respiratory or lung related problems. We will seek another postmortem.”

Naresh has alleged that in the wee hours of Friday morning, beat marshalls allegedly got into an argument with Sachin and his friends over a trivial issue and beat him up leaving him unconscious.  The family was informed at around 10am on Friday that Sachin had died and his body was at Rajawadi hospital.
