Two cops and a BEST bus driver sustained minor injuries when members of two communities carrying soda water bottles, wooden sticks and stones clashed at Sewri on Tuesday night.

A BEST bus and dozens of shops were damaged in the riot. The incident took place at around 9.30pm outside the fish market at Sewri. Around 250 people were shouting and abusing the people of another community. After some time the mob got violent.

The additional police force led by DCP (Zone-IV) Sanjay Bavisar rushed to the spot and appealed to the rioters to maintain the peace. However, rioters continued attacking each other. Inspector A Jagtap and sub inspector Vilas Wagralkar of RAM Marg police station and BEST bus driver Anil Gholap sustained minor injuries.

They were rushed to the KEM hospital and allowed to go after first aid.

“The police arrested 36 persons from the both communities for the riot, damaging public property and attack on duty government officers on Tuesday. They were remanded to police custody till March 4 by the Bhoiwada metropolitan magistrate court on Wednesday,” said ACP (Matunga division) Dilip Suryawanshi and added that the patrolling has been intensified and the situation was now under control. The police are finding exact reason behind clash.
