As many as 12 police stations in the city have not paid heed to orders of the police top-brass, failing to comply with orders and reminders from the commissionerate to ferret out illegal hotels and lodges in their jurisdictions.

Although senior police officers have sent three reminders to all the police stations in the city to submit a list of licenced hotels and lodges in their areas, Khadak, Kothrud, Faraskhana (Zone I), Bund Garden, Swargate, Sahakarnagar (Zone II), Nigdi, Bhosari, Chinchwad (Zone III), Khadki, Yerawada and Airport police stations (Zone IV) have not submitted their reports yet.

On August 28 last year, top police officers issued orders for the third time to all police stations to comply. This followed intelligence inputs of illegal activities being carried out in various hotels and lodges in the city. It came to the notice of the higher-ups that many prominent hostelries in the city were functioning without licences.

According to rules, every hotel and lodge has to have a valid licence from the police, along with that from the health department of the Pune Municipal Corporation. Senior police officers had directed police stations to take appropriate action against establishments functioning without proper licences.

Said one senior officer, “We have reminded them three times, but they (stations) haven’t taken cognizance of it. When we asked them the reason, they kept mum. This time, however, we expect them to act on our orders.”

In the recent past, the city police have failed to conduct drives against illegal sale of liquor and incidents of prostitution in hotels, restaurants and dhabas on state and national highways within the jurisdiction of the Pune city police. Three national highways (Pune-Hyderabad, Pune-Bangalore, Pune-Mumbai) and five state highways pass through the city.

On October 20 last year, the special inspector general police (law and order), Gulabrao Pol, had issued a circular to all commissonerates in the state to conduct special drives and submit reports to the director-general’s office each month. It stated that the police station incharge must visit hotels, restaurants and dhabas in his/her jurisdiction.

When contacted, senior police inspector Chandrakant Godke of Kothrud police station declined comment, saying, “I am very busy with work.”
