11 killed as truck rams into devotees

Eleven people were killed when a truck rammed into warkaris (devotees of Lord Vitthal), while another person was killed in subsequent police firing near Jalna in Maharashtra's Marathwada region on Monday.

Eleven people were killed when a truck rammed into warkaris (devotees of Lord Vitthal), while another person was killed in subsequent police firing near Jalna in Maharashtra's Marathwada region on Monday.

"Eleven people were killed when the truck rammed into warkaris on the Ambad-Beed road. The warkaris were returning from Pandharpur," Jalna SP Sanjay Mohite said.

Following the accident, a mob set some police vehicles on fire, after which police fired at the mob.

"One person was killed and four were injured in the police firing," Mohite said.

None of those killed or injured in the firing was a warkari, he said, adding all were locals.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan announced financial assistance of Rs one lakh each to the kin of those killed in the accident, an official from the CM's Office said.
