The first-ever CCTV camera system inside a local train in Mumbai will be commissioned on Friday by the Western Railway. Officials said that WR has been testing the system for almost six months now and that the CCTVs are now good enough to be deployed.

Currently the CCTV system is being installed in the ladies coaches of three rakes, with each coach having anything between four to eight cameras." The system records the data in a digital video recorder which has sufficient capacity to store the data for 30 days. This data can be used by investigating agencies, in case of any untoward incident affecting lady commuters," said a WR spokesperson.

Explaining the technicalities of the system, an official said that the cameras have a resolution of three mega pixels with wide angle to cover all corners of the compartment. "It is installed in such a way so that the entry and exit of the compartment can be monitored to capture images of all who enter and exit the compartment. These cameras are customised for requirements of the railway and are based on traction technology that can withstand shock and vibrations as the trains often clock 80-100 kmph on the suburban section," said a WR statement.

"Subsequent to introduction of this rake in service, feedback will be obtained from all concerned before extending it to other EMU rakes," said the WR spokesperson.
