If you missed voting in this Lok Sabha polls owing to your name missing from the voter's list, here is a chance to get your name registered for future polls. The Election Commission of Maharashtra will begin the voter registration process from May 29th, which will continue till one week before the nomination process begins for the candidates of state elections — due in October this year.

"This is a reminder and an appeal for all those who could not vote earlier or have now turned 18 years of age to register themselves with the commission as soon as possible," said a senior election officer.

The election commission is also planning an extensive summary revision drive starting June to help people enroll. "It is also important to inform people that having a voter identity card alone does not make them eligible for voting. The voter must have his/her name in the area voter list," the officer added.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the collector's office claimed that voters could check the status of their names in the voter list by calling on helpline numbers 1950/1800221950 or by sending their ten digit voter identity card number on 869889966. The status can also be checked online on the election commission website ceo.maharashtra.gov.in.

Both Mumbai and Pune saw a major uproar over missing names during recent Lok Sabha polls. In both cities, residents as well as political parties staged protests and filed repeated complaints with the commission over the missing names. While Pune, which voted on April 17, did not evoke any reaction from the commission office, the Mumbai fiasco saw an apology from the Election Commissioner of India HS Brahma, who admitted to lapses in the election procedure and apologized to people for the missing names. Later, a few agitated NGOs even filed a case in the Bombay High Court questioning the legality of the process. The petition, however, is still pending before the court.
