Contaminated water supply is not only haunting people at home, but also at malls. If rumours are to be believed then Viviana – one of the popular malls in Thane – has been getting contaminated water supply and shoppers have been complaining about it for the past few days.

It all started in Balkum area, where the residents hit the streets to protest against muddy water supply. Apparently, the residents of this area had been receiving muddy water since few months and took up the issue with civic officials. But since nothing was done, they took to the streets. And now the contaminated water supply at Viviana has raised the question on civic authorities' attitude towards this problem.

With the ongoing monsoon sales, shoppers throng malls and mostly spend the entire day. They eat and drink at malls too, however this incident proved costly for few shoppers who after reaching home complained of stomach upset, nausea and other problems. All of them at consumed food and drank water from inside the mall.

After rumours started spreading, some people dropped the idea of visiting the mall, while those who chose to head there did not drink or eat while shopping at the mall. Divyesh Vyas, a shopper, said, "Since the time we have heard about contaminated water at the mall, we have altered our programme and informed our friends too. We are carrying water with us and not eating anything from the mall."

However, the mall management said, "These are rumours. We have made all the arrangements and taken necessary steps to ensure safety of shoppers; health regulation is in place. Shoppers should not worry. The mall understands that safety of patrons is its utmost priority and will ensure to take care of it in best possible way."

In the past few months the Thane-based mall has been in news. "The rumour of contamination water at the mall circulating on WhatsApp is a deliberate effort to defame the mall. We will muling over filing an official complaint with the cyber crime cell," the mall authority said.

Thane Municipal Corporation PRO Sandeep Malvi said, "The mall has outsourced water from private tanker supplier. Though we have provided them with eight piped waterline connections, they are outsourcing water without checking its source. They could have opted for tankers from the TMC, which is cost effective. They could have intimated us about more water requirement, but choose none of these. We have taken the water sample and sent it to the lab for test. Based on the results, we will plan our action."
