With the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) firm in its stand that from October waste segregation at source and composting will be mandatory for bulk generators, a three-day exhibition on waste management, which began on Friday, has set the ball rolling for housing societies and commercial units in the city. More than 40 companies and NGOs have set up stalls, displaying the latest technology for waste management at the lowest cost and minimal space.

Apart from managing waste at source, bulk waste generators can be used to generate either energy or gas that can be used to light up homes or gas stoves.

On the first two days of the exhibition, hundreds of housing societies across the city and hotel owners visited and enquired about the technology for waste management.

Vincent Pinto, a resident of Colaba said, “As the BMC has decided to make composing mandatory from October, we are now looking for latest technology that can be set up in minimal space.” He added that societies in south Mumbai do not have much space for composting.

In May, the A ward of BMC had issued notices to all hotels, government offices, Army cantonment area, banks and other organisations to start facilities like organic waste converter, vermi-composting, bio-methanation or any other proven method in their backyard, or in the vicinity to treat the wet waste at source. Around, 237 such commercial establishments were served notice to treat waste by composting at source by May 31, 2017. If not, the civic body said it would stop lifting of garbage from June 1, 2017.

However, the civic body gave housing societies and commercial units, having space of over 20,000 sw metre or generating over 100 kg waste every day, extended time as they were unable to carry out composting due to lack of space.

A senior official from the solid waste management (SWM) of BMC said, “The exhibition has been organsied for all such societies including bulk generators to get an idea about waste management and its benefits.”

At present, around 7500 MT tonnes of garbage is generated every day in Mumbai. However, the capacity of the dumping ground has been exhausted and there is an urgent need to manage waste at the source.
