A group of 30 enthusiasts celebrated Diwali by distributing a lunch box along with a chocolate to the street children on Saturday. They undertook this initiative in various parts of Mumbai to reach out to 400 needy street dwellers at various signals and footpaths.

Some members of the motley group are pursuing their graduation, while a few are just in their first jobs. Prerna Rajput, who undertook this project said that their motive was to spread smiles and happiness around. She had discussed the idea with a few friends and shared the concept on a specially-created Facebook page, 'A day of smiles', with an appeal to participate and contribute towards the cost of the meal boxes to be distributed. Friends and a relative's friends also joined in from Mulund.

After consultations, it was decided to serve fresh food that recipients would need to consume on the same day. They decided to provide them with three rotis, a subzi, biryani and a bar of chocolate, which would serve as a Diwali sweet in the box.

Thanks to the support of her friends and relatives, Rajput said the group was able to meet the cost of the initiative easily through the accrued contributions.

On Saturday, the group of 30 was divided into five sub-groups and they visited the areas of Sion,Wadala, Dadar, Mahim Kalina, Chembur and Mulund. Prerna and her friends distributed the boxes to children and senior citizens sitting by the side of the roads and at signals.

Some of the children started eating their meals at once, and the several of the homeless senior citizens responded with blessings for the enthusiastic youngsters and thaked them for their good work.

Rajput had done a project during her employment training period, after her graduation in Financial Markets from SIES College in Sion, and was inspired by that experience to take up this initiative. After seeing the enthusiastic response via Facebook and the willingness of her friends to join such an initiative, Rajput said that she would absolutely take up such work again.
