Parents, who are worried with their wards' rising academic fees, can now breathe a sigh of relief with the school bus owner's association (SBOA) deciding to temporarily withdraw their decision of increasing Rs300 for the coming academic year following the state's decision to waive off toll charges on school buses.

Public works department (PWD) minister Chandrakantdada Patil said that government would come out with a corrigendum waiving off toll on school buses. This correction will be issued within eight days, he added.

From June 1 (May 31 midnight), 11 toll nakas under PWD's jurisdiction and one under MSRDC will be closed with the state government buying them back. Similarly, 53 toll nakas, including the PWD's 27 and 26 under the MSRDC will see cars, jeeps and buses being exempted from payment of toll. The state will reimburse toll contractors.

The association had written a letter this month to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to waive off toll charges for school buses at toll nakas. Since the request was accepted, the association have decided to refrain from increasing the fees.

According to SBOA, around 48,500 school buses across the state are members of this association. Out of these buses, 200 school buses ferry children by crossing toll nakas every year. In Mumbai alone, the count of buses that cross toll booths is 50 while the number in Navi Mumbai is 75.

President of SBOA Anil Garg said, "Buses that ferry children from their home to school and back again via toll nakas atleast pays Rs13,200 per month at these toll booths. Hence, we thought of increasing the bus fees. Since the CM approved our request to waive off the toll charges for the school buses, we will now refrain from doing so."
