Balcony of a three storey building collapsed on Sunday afternoon in Kurla (w) after heavy rain lashed the city. No one was injured in the incident, however, there was a narrow escape for around six families residing in the more than 60-year-old dilapidated building.

Around 1.30pm, part of Bhusan Bhawan building near Halao bridge started crumbling. There was chaotic situation. The balcony of the building collapsed.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had declared the building unsafe for living in 2014 and put it in C1 category, as most dangerous. However, residents refused to vacate the building. The BMC had even disconnected water and electricity connection on many occasions. But, some of the families continue to reside. In the beginning of 2018, some of the families managed stay of eviction from the building from the City civil court.

Bharat Marathe, deputy municipal commissioner of Zone V said that taking as precautionary measure, we have asked police that no families are allowed to enter in the building. “The building has also tilted in the back side. There is a chawl behind the building and we have asked the tenants of chawl to vacate as safety measure,” said Marathe.

Ashraf Azmi, congress corporator from the area said that there was some issue between tenants and owner of the building. “Tenants were demanding rent for period during a new building is constructed after demolishing the dangerous one. But, the issue could not be solve in time and some families remained stayed there,” said Azmi. He added that there are 29 flats and 8 shops in the building and most of families have already vacated. Meanwhile, the civic administration vacated the building as a precautionary measure. Marathe said, families can take temporary shelter in BMC schools. “BMC will provide temporary shelter and food to them,” said Marethe.
