Monsoon continues to build its pace along the western coastline as rain continued to drench Mumbai and areas around it on the third straight day. Mapping the increasing pace of rains, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted plentiful showers in the month of July.

The expected shower cover this month, is even lined to makeup for the overall 11 per cent deficiency witnessed in June. The city, till 7pm, received around of 43.43mm of rains on Friday. South Mumbai continued to be hit the hardest, around 48.9mm, followed by Eastern suburban regions which witnessed 47mm and Western stretches experiencing 34.4mm of downpour.

Meanwhile, the heavy spell also drizzled on the lakes providing water for the city and livening the hopes of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Giving details of rainfall received in five major lakes from 6am to 6pm, the numbers read: Modaksagar having received 16.44mm of rainfall, Tansa 24.20mm, Vihar 142.80mm, Tulsi 179.50mm, Middle Vaitarna 21.40mm and Bhatsa 34 mm.

City witnesses 17 water-logging areas

Water-logging continued to be an everyday feature in the city as an effect of the drizzle. According to the civic report, the city saw water-logging, ranging from one to two feet of waters, across 17 different areas.

Areas of South Central Mumbai, including Sion, Wadala, Hindmata and parts of King Circle, continued to be submerged in water, which also took a toll on pedestrian and vehicular commute. Mid-afternoon proved taxing for several motorists around Parel TT area, wherein localised water blockage saw bumper-to-bumper traffic.

High-tide of 4.04 m in the day also supplemented to the water collection in low-lying parts of the city. "As soon as the high-tide receded the water also drained away. This also assisted in fastening the clogged traffic in some parts of the city," a BMC officer said.
