Plans are afoot to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for Jogeshwari-SEEPZ-Kanjurmarg metro rail, so that it can be integrated with Andheri-Dahisar, Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ and Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Kasarvadavali metro rails.

The idea is to construct close to 11-km-long elevated metro line starting from Western Express Highway (WEH), next to SRPF ground, and go along the Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) connecting SEEPZ, and also proposed Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ corridor and moving further towards Kanjurmarg.

The line will end just short of Eastern Express Highway at the intersection of JVLR and Ghatkopar-Bhandup Road (Seth Govindram Jolly Marg).

A source said: "Car depot of this corridor is likely to be at Kanjurmarg, spread over an area of around 10-14 hectares." The estimated price for this project is likely to be between Rs4,500 crore and Rs5,000 crore.

At the moment, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials have begun work on updating the DPR, which is likely to get completed in the next four months.

This will be Mumbai's second metro corridor providing East-West connectivity, the first being Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro. The added advantage of the proposed line will be the integration with three metro routes, namely – elevated Andheri-Dahisar metro at WEH, underground Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro rail at SEEPZ and underground Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Kasarvadavali metro on LBS Road at Kanjurmarg.

Once the DPR is ready, the details will be approved by the MMRDA, which will forward it to the state cabinet for a formal nod. Thereafter, there will be tie-ups for loan from international finance agencies and the project getting transferred to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation for implementation and execution.

Similarly, work has commenced to update the DPR of the 18-km long Andheri East-Dahisar East metro rail, for which elevated Bus Rapid Transit System on the WEH has been kept on hold for some months.
