The 17-year-old girl, who allegedly hung herself to death, was fed up of seeing her father under pressure of changing their rented home in outer Delhi's Alipur, because she felt harassed in their existing neighbourhood. The revelation has come to fore in a suicide note she left behind, police said.
In her note, wherein she addressed her parents for the last time, the Class 12 student repeatedly mentioned that she had not done anything wrong, but "People of Delhi will not let me live". Police are trying to reach a conclusion through indirect allegations that she made through the letter.
The girl, who hailed from Bihar, had moved to Alipur's Bakhtawarpur village almost a decade ago. Her father, a labourer worked at nearby construction sites while the mother works at a local store. The girl's family has alleged that a youth in their locality had been pressuring her to marry him, and were harassing her for the last one year.
It was on Saturday morning that the girl locked herself inside the house and hanged herself from the ceiling fan after her mother left for work. The neighbours broke open the door of the house and pulled the body down. "She was taken to a hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. After post-mortem examination, which primarily did not hint at anything suspicious, her body was handed over to the family," said a police officer.
Rajneesh Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Rohini, said a case has been registered under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) and Section 12 of the POCSO Act at Alipur police station. "We have identified the accused as a 20-year-old man from the neighbourhood. Efforts are on to arrest him," Gupta said.
In her suicide note, the girl mentioned her father and wrote that they would not require to change the house now. "I have lived my life and do not wish to live more. People of Delhi will not let me live. I have not done anything wrong. Please forgive me if I was wrong," the note read.
