With the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) elections slated to be in October, a list of reserve wards was declared last Friday, which mentioned the newly included 27 villages. However, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has opposed this demanding that wards in these villages should be formed first and then they must be included in the reserve category.

The KDMC elections are going to be an exciting affair this time with the inclusion of 27 villages in the jurisdiction. But the elections are already gaining controversy after the declaration of wards under reserved category.

"They have declared reserved wards without proper demarcation of the wards. We are opposing this and will meet the state election commission," said Pramod Indurao, NCP's vice-president for Maharashtra.

The population of Kalyan and Dombivli is 15,18,762 lakh and there are 107 seats in the KDMC. With the inclusion of 27 villages, the seats have gone up to 122 and the party believes that there should be more seats now.

"There should be 140 seats for 140 wards. They have used old census data and should include the current population data for ward demarcation," Indurao added.

Of the 122 seats, 12 seats have been reserved for scheduled caste and three for scheduled tribes. Seventy four are open seats, while 33 are for OBCs. There is 50% reservation for women in each ward.

KDMC, however, said they have used 2011 census data for demarcation of wards. "The elections are held as per the state EC's order and wards have been demarcated accordingly. If they [NCP] have an objection to these reservations, they can raise it with the EC till August 10," said a KDMC official.
