Mumbai: Twelve firemen injured in Worli fire

Narrow bylanes and illegal parking again posed hurdles before the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) as it struggled to reach the fire site.

Firemen got suffocated at Worli’s Sadhana Mill

Twelve firemen were injured while combating another fire incident that broke out on the ground floor of a commercial building in Sadhana Industrial Estate at Worli, on Saturday evening. Narrow bylanes and illegal parking again posed hurdles before the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) as it struggled to reach the fire site.

Over 20 motorcycles were lifted from the road to make way for fire vehicles. The fire was reported at around 4.46 pm amid the stock of medicine and chemical stored in the ground floor of the ground plus three-storeyed commercial building located behind BDD Chawl, G M Bhosale Marg, in Worli.

According to MFB, the fire was confined in around 4,000 square feet area and initially, it was level two fire. However, by around 7.58 pm, the level was increased to four which is called high magnitude fire. Firemen were injured due to suffocation and they have been admitted to the KEM Hospital and Podar Hospital in Worli. The smoke covered up to the third floor of the building and the injured included a firewoman. Some of the residents were also admitted to a nearby hospital.

Dr Pravin Bangar from KEM hospital informed that one fireman and firewoman was admitted due to suffocation and they are currently under observation. They have been identified as Vishal Vishvarsao, 38 and Swati Satpute, 40.

Six another firemen have been admitted in Podar Hospital in Worli and their condition is stable.

One of them has been identified as Venkatesh Devkate from Byculla fire station. He is admitted in Podar Hospital in Worli.

Ganesh Tuthe, a resident said that they saw smoke coming out from the building. "The smell of the smoke was unbearable and we could hardly breathe. We had to cover our faces with cloth," Tuthe said.

The MFB sent 14 fire engines, 9 water tankers, ambulances, and other fire vehicles to the spot.
