The Mumbai police's twitter account is flooded with complaints and the best part is that the victims are getting an immediate response. The twitter handle has received as many as 115 complaints since its launch. Three of the complaints were immediately converted into first information reports (FIRs).

Mumbai police had launched its twitter handle @MumbaiPolice and commissioner of police Ahmad Javed had launched his twitter handle @CPMumbaiPolice on December 28.

"We have received 115 complaints on the Mumbai Police twitter handle. Most were related to traffic issues in the city. Some people, through their tweets, brought to light their plight regarding their cases already filed with the police, while some sought information about police laws, rules and regulations," said deputy commissioner of police and Mumbai police spokesperson, Dhananjay Kulkarni.

He added that of the complaints received, three were converted into FIRs and action was taken against five traffic violators.

A senior police officer, however, said unverified information was posing a major problem. "People post several videos and information on twitter and seek police action on them. It takes time for us to verify the information.

Recently, someone posted a video grab wherein a traffic police constable was lambasted by a cleric. The video was marked to several senior officers from Mumbai Police on twitter. It later turned out to be from Jalgaon. We then communicated it to the police department concerned and requested them to take required action," said the officer.

As a confidence-building measure among citizens, top cop Javed also launched a chat room on twitter, #ChatWithCP, on January 1. The commissioner made himself available for twitteratis for a 30-minute interaction, during which, the citizens brought their issues to his notice.

"We have seen in the past that miscreants take to the social media platform to spread rumours, which sometimes leads to a law and order situation. Now with Mumbai police available on twitter, citizens can directly contact us and get the information verified. This way, we would be able to stop the spreading of rumours," said another police officer.
