Carter Road in Bandra witnessed a unique event on Sunday called 'Liberation for All', organised by India Against Speciesism, aimed at drawing attention to animals who suffer because of the everyday choices that human beings make.

Speciesism is the idea that being human is a good enough reason for human animals to have greater moral rights than non-human animals.

Through speak-outs, videos and placards, the organisers stressed on the fact that animals also suffer unspeakable atrocities, ranging from being sexually abused as breeding machines to heart-breaking separations from their offspring.

The Mumbai volunteers also conducted an interactive demonstration, 'Brave the crate', to help people realise the immense misery that egg-laying hens undergo.

Mandar Kokamkar, who was present at the event, said: "I was raised as a non-vegetarian, but after watching 'Earthlings' and other videos that brought out the suffering that animals face due to our choices, I went vegan right away. Apart from not eating meat, eggs, dairy products or milk and honey, being vegan also involves avoiding leather, wool, silk, fur, pearls, zoos, animal circuses and animal-tested products — basically all animal products, except when it's truly necessary for survival."

Brinda Poojary, the organiser of the event, said, "Everybody deserves freedom. It is a right that's not reserved only for human animals. Today, we are spreading awareness about a form of discrimination called 'speciesism', which is the discrimination on the unjust basis that a non-human animal does not belong to our species. Like sexism, casteism, colourism and racism have to be eradicated, speciesism, too, needs to be rid of. In order to do so, we have to recognise the fact that animals are not ours to use and shun all animal products that come from the use, abuse or exploitation of animals for food, clothing, entertainment, experiment, transport, labour, etc."

Susmitha, a food blogger and restaurateur, said: "Apart from sparing animals lifelong misery, living and advocating veganism is vital to our environmental sustainability and beneficial for human health. When we consume animal products, we also indirectly consume all the plants fed daily to the animals for their entire lifetime. The UN reports that 50% of the world's grains are fed to animals exploited for human wants."

The event was held in a synchronised manner across seven major cities across India. The participating cities were Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jammu, Mumbai and Pune.
