Officials at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have said that the chances are that the southwest monsoon winds will hit Mumbai in the next few days, even as the city continues to witness intermittent rains.

“The southwest monsoon has reached Harnai, located north of Ratnagiri and the interiors of Kolhapur and there has been a good rainfall in several areas of south Konkan. Places like Dapoli, Ratnagiri have reported around 200 mm of rainfall. However, Mumbai may have to wait for few more days for arrival of monsoons but since there is forecast there will be good spell of pre-monsoon showers in the next 48 hours,” said KS Hosalikar, Deputy Director General (Western region) IMD.

IMD has also issued warnings for fishermen on the south coast of Konkan, which is set to experience increasing rains over the next 48 hours.

Normally the monsoons hit Mumbai by June 10. Last year, it was delayed by 10 days. This year, the IMD has upgraded its monsoon forecast for the country this year to 98% from the earlier 96%.
