In order to provide another link between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has inched closer to the completion of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Ghatkopar-Ghansoli-Kopar Khairane creek bridge.

A senior development authority official said a consultant is working on preparing the DPR for the latest bridge for Mumbai and it is likely to be submitted in the coming months.

There has also been revision in the alignment of the creek bridge and has been shifted some metres towards Kannamwar Nagar in Vikhroli on the Eastern Express Highway instead of the earlier plans of going over the Kanjurmarg dumping ground site.

The initial plan was to erect the bridge over Kanjurmarg dumping ground by constructing pillars within the dumping ground plot. But the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was uncomfortable with the plan and the alignment had to be revised.

At an estimated price of Rs550 crore, the bridge will be 6.50km, with around 2.23km of it over the Thane Creek.

At the moment, there are two creek bridges connecting Mumbai with Navi Mumbai, they are at Vashi and Airoli.

Due to the manifold increase in the number of vehicles and rise in development in Navi Mumbai, road congestion has risen at these entry-exit points of Mumbai. Now, the areas of Ghansoli, Dronagiri, Ulwe, Taloja and others are where developers are creating housing stock at prices less than those in Vashi, Nerul, Belapur and other areas. With the population likely to increase substantially, there has been a need to add another such bridge.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) too had plans to have another creek bridge at Vashi, but it has been unable to construct it due to lack of funds. The MMRDA and City and Industrial Development Corporation were willing to share the expenditure for the construction with a condition that part of the revenue from toll will have to be shared with them, which MSRDC refused.

At this juncture, the implementation stages and dates of the Ghatkopar-Ghansoli-Kopar Khairane creek bridge have not been finalised.
