In an attempt to make health care more transparent and safe, the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) on Wednesday sent notices to 600 doctors across Maharashtra who got their basic doctor's degree from foreign universities.

According to the MMC, most of these doctors have been putting up misleading boards to attract patients to their clinics.

Dr Kishor Taori, president of MMC said, "Many people prefer getting a doctor's degree from foreign universities to avoid the strenuous process of getting the MBBS degree. We have found that such people have been practising in Maharashtra by putting up a board of 'MD physician', which is misleading. We found 600 of them and have sent notices."

Calling them qualified quacks, Taori said they had received several complaints about such doctors. "We have got complaints about such doctors who have got their basic medical degree from universities in Russia, Ukraine, China, etc. We are also keeping a close watch on foreign-trained doctors who pursue postgraduate course via distance education," said Taori.

He added that a person getting a doctor's degree abroad needs to undergo a national screening examination, before getting registered as an MBBS, from the local medical council. "We are waiting for their reply but we plan to take some stringent steps to ensure no one repeats this mistake," said Taori.

The council has also issued a stringent warning to postgraduate doctors who have failed to register their additional qualification with the council. "A PG doctor has to register additional qualification with the MMC. This is to avoid legal problems in practice in case a patient complains that the said doctor doesn't have an MMC registration to practice as a specialist,'' said Taori.
