Members, staffers slam Bandra gym owner for abrupt shutdown

Isha Punjabi, who had paid for the gym's annual membership, along with her mother, said, “It seems she has not paid the rent for the last few months. We want the gym to reopen in the same place because of the proximity. Otherwise, we want a complete refund from Mogre.”

A branch of celebrity trainer Leena Mogre's gym in Bandra's Crystal Shoppers Paradise mall was shut abruptly on April 7. Enraged members of the gym, who lost the money they had paid as membership fee, claimed that Mogre had not paid the lease amount, following which the property owner sealed the gym. Mogre has denied all allegations.

Isha Punjabi, who had paid for the gym's annual membership, along with her mother, said, “It seems she has not paid the rent for the last few months. We want the gym to reopen in the same place because of the proximity. Otherwise, we want a complete refund from Mogre.”

Dr Mitosh Ruparrel, who had also paid for annual membership just a month before the shut-down, said, “The gym has been shut for a month now. I am waiting for Mogre's response. Whatever the case may be, it is affecting my fitness regime.”

Meenakshi Gupta and her husband had collectively paid Rs43,000 as annual fees. They said, “Mogre has handled the entire issue in an extremely unprofessional manner. We called her several times after the gym was abruptly shut. The response we got from her was that the gym was shut for AC maintenance and will reopen soon. Nothing of that sort has happened till now.”

Mogre, however, had a different version to tell. “The property had a lot of issues, such as security and maintenance of air-conditioners. We faced a lot of problems. Some were sorted out while we are still negotiating for the others.

If I had to run away, I wouldn't respond to people at all. I assure you that the gym will reopen by month-end.” When dna queried her about allegations of non-payment of rent, she said, “I wouldn't want to comment on it.”

Meanwhile, apart from the members, the gym employees were also in a fix as they have not received their salary, in some cases for months. A trainer, on the basis of anonymity, said, “I haven't got a part of my salary since January. If I am not paid by this month-end, I will approach the police.”

Reportedly, 60 gym members even sent a letter to the Khar police station. Senior police inspector Ramchandra Jadhav, however, seemed to be unaware of any such grievance letter.

“If there is any such letter, we will inquire about it,” he said. Despite several calls, owner Harsh Kaushal Developers remained unavailable for comments.
