Following MNS chief Raj Thackeray’s speech opposing reservation for Marathas in government jobs, Sambhaji Brigade, the youth wing of the Maratha Seva Sangh, has decided not to allow him to hold any public meetings and burn his effigies across the state.

Thackeray, in his public address in Jalgaon recently, had said, “The state government had no good intention behind giving reservations to the Maratha community. It wants to break up the community on a caste basis. And it is the government’s ploy to divert the attention of the public from issues of corruption. If it happens, then the state will be divided in various regions and cast. I want an integrated Maharashtra.”

In reply to this, Liladhar Patil, chief of Sambhaji Brigade (North Maharashtra region), said, “Raj Thackeray has no right to talk about the issue of reservation. He himself is dividing the nation by spreading anti-north India hatred. A person who cannot espouse national integration and unity loses the right to say that the state will be divided on the basis of caste. We want reservations in government jobs. We are not asking for the political reservation,” Patil explained.

In protest, the Sambhaji Brigade will not allow the MNS chief to hold any more public meetings.

“We have decided to burn an effigy of Thackeray and spread awareness that Thackeray is anti-Maratha. He had earlier opposed the Shivaji memorial,” Patil said.

He added that they are demanding reservations for poor Marathas, not affluent ones. “If reservations have been made for the Kunbi community, then why not for Marathas? There is no difference between the two. Earlier, all Marathas were Kunbis because of their agrarian profession. The reservation will help them get an education as well as jobs. Because of the absence of government jobs, many Maratha youths are frustrated,” Patil said.

NCP MLA Vinayak Mete said they have been asking for reservations for Marathas for a long time. “If the government fails to fulfill the promises it has made, then we will not vote for them in the upcoming elections. The Maratha community should not be taken for granted,” he said.
