Social Service Branch (SSB) of the city police, on Thursday, arrested a man for allegedly trying to sell an 18-year-old girl into prostitution. The accused had brought the victim, a native of Madhya Pradesh, to the city promising he would get her a job in an event management company, the police said. They have rescued the girl.

According to the police, the victim is from Indore and belongs to a poor family. "The accused is known to her family. Two days ago he told her parents that he would get her a job in an event management firm in Mumbai. The family then sent the victim with the accused to Mumbai," said an SSB officer.

In Mumbai, the accused was about to sell the victim to a prostitution racket and was supposed to get Rs3 lakh in the transaction.

"We had received information that a woman would be sold for Rs3 lakh in a guest house at Gamdevi. Accordingly, we laid a trap and arrested the accused and rescued the girl. The accused was booked under charges of Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act and handed over to Gamdevi police," the officer said.

The accused was produced before a court which remanded him in police custody till December 24. Cops are investigating whether he has committed similar acts in the past. Police have also informed victim's parents about their daughter being rescued. They are expected to reach Mumbai in a couple of days, police said.
