Inspired by the Swacch Bharat initiative, the Khar Gymkhana, a premier sports club in the western suburbs, will be hosting a 2-day long GO GREEN carnival starting today. The aim is to remind Mumbaikars of the urgent need to drastically reduce their carbon footprint, conserve valuable resources and recycle to ensure a cleaner and greener environment.
"No other gymkhana has come up with an initiative like this where the manifesto by our prime minister for cleanliness and energy conservation has been applied," said Ashok Mohanani, president of Khar Gymkhana.
Staying true to the 'GO GREEN' theme, there will be 18 stalls set up in the gymkhana's central lawn, Every stall will promote technologies like solar power, waste recycling techniques, rain water harvesting, electric cars, LED lighting, etc.
Workshops will be held on rain water harvesting and urban gardening, along with quiz competitions, collage painting, poster painting and a treasure hunt, all based on the carnival's theme. Adding to the mood will be fusion music and street plays. Artists will paint murals on 2,000 sq ft of wall space to act as reminders on the need to conserve.
A Green Walk has been planned for Sunday. "Our members will wear green T-shirts and walk the streets adjoining the gymkhana to create awareness. Various eco-friendly transportation mediums including electric cars and bicycles will form part of the Green Float," said Pradeep G Kamath, member of the carnival committee.
As part of its 'Internal Waste Management' project, the gymkhana will be using a decentralized waste management system to handle all the waste it generates in its premises. This will ensure that minimum waste is sent to the dumpyard. Another initiative is the 'Member Mobilization Project'. The gymkhana is mobilizing its members to drop their household dry waste at its premises. This is to ensure that the dry waste is recycled, while the proceeds gathered through its sale will be used to set up a small scholarship fund for children of the gymkhana's employees.
The carnival will begin around 10.30 am and go on till evening.
