In the wake of FOB collapse last week in the city, killing six, all flyovers and foot overbridges (FOB)'s on Western Express Highway (WEH) and Eastern Express Highway (EEH) handled by agencies will soon undergo structural inspection and audit.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) that maintains several flyovers on WEH and EEH will carryout structural audit of the flyovers it maintains on WEH and EEH. Along with this, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials who look after several flyovers and FOB on WEH and EEH is also going to carryout structural inspection of the same to ensure the emergency exits and safety measures required are undertaken. Post the collapse of the CSMT bridge last week, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been at the receiving end for the safety lapse. They have started re-auditing and proposing to demolish FOB's that are not in good condition.

A MSRDC official said, "We have been carrying out audits and inspection regularly. Also because of the ongoing Metro project work on WEH and EEH, the flyovers under our purview are already been watched. But after the last week's incidents we have decided to carryout fresh safety audit to ensure and address safety concerns that may come out post the audit."

The MSRDC now anticipates that the repair work will start from April 20, and will go on for two months during which Sion flyover will remain shut completely.

Several flyovers on WEH and EEH that falls under MMRDA will be inspected followed by FOB's on the WEH between Dahisar and Andheri. MMRDA official said, "We were asked to carryout safety inspection post the bridge collapse last week. We have accordingly started the safety structural inspection in order to address any issues."
