The Maharashtra government has set up a committee to study and implement electronic tagging at toll nakas across the state. The state Public Works Department chief engineer will be the president of the committee and various regional engineers will be the members. The committee will submit its report within two months.

"At present, commuters have to spend a lot of time getting receipts for toll. The time consuming practice results into piling of vehicles at the check nakas," stated the circular. It further said if there were three-four more toll booths on the way, the commuters ended up wasting even more time.

"We have to find out a technology-based solution, which is ever lasting and accepted by the people. An e-tag will solve all the problems. This technology is being widely used in Europe and western countries. We expect the committee to study all issues pertaining to the toll booths and give practical solutions," said a senior government official.

He added that the practice will also bring in more transparency. The government has outlined some guidelines for the committee, including instructing it to study highways where the e-tag has been implemented by the Centre.

"The committee has to seek information on firms that are providing the e-tag technology. Besides, it has to understand the total expenditure, and even ask the firms to give presentations. Moreover, it needs to recommend effective implementation of the technology," the circular stated. The government has planned to implement e-tagging at 27 toll booths.
